Raw Goat Milk
I am always a little baffled at the raw milk debate.
I have been drinking raw goat milk, fresh from our farm, for a while now and have never experienced the negative side that is so oft reported by the media. Even when we participated in a cow share program off farm, the only problem we encountered was the discovery that we preferred goat milk.
I absolutely understand the importance of food safety practices, I just don't understand how our culture and government are so willing to embrace the slow killers we call carbohydrates and sugars while shunning healthy fats and good bacteria.
Raw milk has historically been consumed by large numbers of farming people without fear because they were milking, filtering, and jarring in sanitary conditions, just as we do at our own farm. When I find myself inadvertently allowing some of the socially generated, anti-raw milk fears to creep in, I take a deep breath and remember that those things have nothing to do with my personal experience...I feel good, healthy, and safe consuming the bounty that our farm produces, and that includes raw milk.
That being said, it is still illegal to sell raw milk here in Virginia. We are able to provide milk as a benefit of a goat herd share program, but that is really the extent of it as far as the public is concerned. We do offer the same milk labeled "not for human consumption" (as required by law) for those who do not need milk on a regular basis.
Anyhow, as we gear up for kidding time once again, I will soon be raising a glass to those who support the rights of farmers and consumers to make our health decisions our own.
